Interesting.
I bet OP will shortly be contacted for a refund as per posting #13.
I wonder if it is an inside job - very suspicious that the stolen cheque book has not been stopped.
Glad that you have not lost out though.0 -

The cheque book probably has been stopped.
While cheques can appear to clear in your account they may not actually bounce for months hence the scrams.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
They bounce immediately .... if there is a Stop on them.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

Be VERY careful.
Someone may have gotten a hold of your bank details and are waiting on you cashing that cheque, then they will remove the funds from your account and a month or two later when the cheque bounces you could be in for a lot of trouble.
Whatever you do, keep a close eye on your accounts.
Internet banking fraud appears to be a lot easier than the banks claim, I know, it happened to me.0 -
Hello all,
Update. I have a major problem.
The cheque has cleared and the company told me on monday that the cheque book had been cancelled. What to do now.
Cheers:oCurrent Debt £38,000:o

The cheque has cleared just now, but in a month or two it will be traced to be fraudulent (stolen).
Call your bank and ask them for help. Explain that you paid it in, but have since been told that it was a stolen cheque book, they should freeze the money, or liaise with the paying bank (name of bank on the cheque) to sort it out. And get them to make sure your account is secure.
DO NOT TOUCH any of that money, you will have to pay it back in a month or two (it may take upto 3 months), and if you do take any of it you could end up in a lot of trouble as you know it is fraudulent.
If you have a Google under common cheque fraud, you will see that banks and companies can reclaim money from you after you have spent it. Heard about the 'I give you £10'000 cheque to cash and you keep £4'000' scams? People didn't cotton on because the cheques do clear, and then 3 months later the bank says the cheque is a fake/stolen/fraud and you now owe them £10'000 because you passed on that £6'000.
Seriously, call your bank, ask for the fraud department and don't mess about.
And try not to worry too much, so long as you are honest, you will be OK.0 -
Be careful with this. I believe it's true to say that at the moment (and this is due to change fairly shortly but I don't believe it has done yet) that most banks can't tell you FOR DEFINATE that a cheque has 'cleared', unless you had done a special presentation/fate of cheque when it was paid in. It is not true to say that a cheque will bounce immediately if there is a stop on it. This usually happens on the 4th working day - it may be quicker if it doesn't go through main clearing (ie if the bank it's being paid into is the same as the bank the cheque is written on).
I'm not sure of the best plan of action though to be quite honest. I would contact your bank for advice - speak to a manager perhaps who knows what they're talking about, not someone who says the company can't be anything after 10 days, which is, as Mikeyorks also said, a load of rubbish.0 -
I would agree with the statement - don't spend a penny of it.
When the inevitable happens and they ask for the money back tell them to ask the bank to refund - don't whatever you do issue your own cheque.
Might be worth reporting it to the police in case you are implicated later on.0
