Is your mortgage on fixed rate or variable?
I'm assuming variable as you've mentioned rates having gone silly.

The problem you have is what if the rate goes back up within the next 6 months. If you've fixed your savings then you may well lose out.
But if you can get an instant access rate that currently beats your mortgage rate then go for it.

    :jHi

hope this is the way to post as I have only ever replied to post before. My brother in law has opened a current account with 6% paid on balances up to 2500 but you can open 2 accounts each.It is with Abbey National. His partner also has opened 2 accounts and although you have to add £1000 pcm they are just transfering from one account to another and have been told thats ok with Abbey.

The Coventry BS is offering a good rate online instant access savings account for the over 50s.
It pays 3.25% fixed (!) for 12 months. I applied today as it is the best product on the market for instant access.

    Wow.

There must be a catch. How is it accessed? Was the bank set up yesterday? There must be some sort of catch with this, it's too good to be true!

If only I was over 50... ah well, I guess when you reach that age, it make sense, I probably couldn't save enough to make that as brilliant as it looks on paper anyway.

Anyone can get pretty close to that rate.

A&L's online saver issue five is paying 3.15% at the moment.

There's no withdrawal penalties and the minimum save is £1. The only "catch" is a 1.65% bonus for 12 months, but by the time that expires there'll doubtless be something better you can move to.
  • Posting on behalf of my Mother who has savings in A&L plus saver payng very little.

She has shown me a leaflet from Post office showing a Growth Bond giving 3.40% for a 1yr fix(over £500)...

I believe a new one is isuued on 13.7.09 which could be 3.85%.

Sounds good but is there a catch?Nobody on this board seems to mention the Post Office savings and not sure why.

    Thanks

Do you mean board or thread? I don't read the forums that widely, but I'm subscribed to this thread. This thread is intended for discussion of instant access accounts; a bond is not an instant access account so they're not mentioned that often.
