Personally I wouldn't agree to a buyer collecting an item in person just for safety reasons. I'm a 23yr old female living alone, and wouldn't want someone I didn't know coming to my home.
    I can understand that. :)

I collect ebay purchases if possible as I often buy guitars and amplifiers that are heavy and expensive to post.

One time I turned up to collect by arrangement. As I rang the doorbell I heard a woman pick up a phone and make a 5 second call.

She opened the door and invited me in. After 20 seconds there was a knock on the door and she let a man in.

I knew exactly what was going on. She had arranged for a neighbour to come round while I was there.

I wasn’t in the slightest offended. She was taking very sensible precautions.
  • how long have you given them?
don't know exactly, it was a long listing and they had not long started when i emailed and its got about 2 days left now confused-smiley-013.gif

i've emailed them again, even more politely than the first one assuring them that the reason i ask is so that i don't waste everyones time with a bid if they won't accept in person delivery.

they still haven't replied, at this stage nothing surprises me, courtesy costs nothing (or at least it didn't when i had a sideline) rolleyes.gif

its getting to the point they are just being ignorant angry-smiley-030.gif

if it makes them feel safe then thats perfectly reasonable, when i used to sell i was going to peoples businesses to sell to them, i often took my mate, for no other reason than there was always potential stock on the way, anything he didn't want for himself i bought and sold on sport-smiley-001.gif

  • i dont like to offer collection on my items, most of my items are brand new and nothing wrong with them, but there is the odd customer out there who will love to haggle with you on your door step over £1 or 2,and having to wait in all day on someone who may never arrive anyway.
i sell my items on ebay and only offer postage as this is convenient for me and 99.9% of my customers.

i had a guy 2 weeks ago who never paid me,i opened a dispute on the item,3 days into the dispute he then gets in touch and asks if he can pay me cash on collection for the item. NO CHANCE!
    ...work permit granted!
  • this item isn't brand new, it is 15 odd years old, weighs quite a bit and is within walking distance of my house. if it works and has a remote then a dispute can't really be entered into, thats my point, the £12 postage is the difference between worth bidding and not worth bidding as it will be travelling probably less than a mile and there is rarely anyone in to recieve it and i wouldn't expect my neighbours to keep a bulky parcel in their house for me (and certain neighbours i wouldn't trust with it anyway lol).

incidentally no-one else has bid on this one yet

Its up to the seller whether they wish to allow personal collections, a simple yes or no from the seller would have quickly resolved your query. From a seller's point of view, one of the downsides of collection is that there is no proof of delivery should the buyer say the item was never delivered. In previous threads on similar questions, some of the more established sellers allow collection but still charge P&P as they still have (in their view) overhead costs to cover so you'd be back to square one.
