Sky TV?

Options
As far as I am aware Sky TV don't report the standing of my account to any CRA.

I'm stuck in an 18-month contract paying £25 a month for a TV package (rising to £27 in April) Whilst I could afford this in the beginning a change of circumstances now means I am really struggling financially to cover utilities like electric, gas and water. I don't consider Sky an essential item.

I was hoping to terminate early with the news of a price increase but I can't according to the T&C's of my contract. I cannot also request to end my minimum term contract early and pay early termination fees.

The only way to cancel seems to default on payments which would force Sky to terminate my contract and charge me early termination fees - which would work out cheaper than staying in a contract.

If I do this are they likely to suddenly report to CRA's and cause a default. Currently my credit file is in good standing and I would like it to stay that way.

  • If they were to pass it to a collection agency then they could then start reporting to the CRA’s.

What makes you believe you cannot exit your contract early due to the price increase?

    No they couldn't.

DCAs can only report if the "creditor" can. They have to follow the same rules as the creditor they bought the debt off.

IF the DCA went for a CCJ and got it that would be reported but I don't believe Sky is reportable on your credit file.

It is written in the terms and conditions, the early termination charges only apply if Sky terminate your contract early because of a breach in T&C"s. You can't even remove the HD channels mid contract to reduce the monthly payment.
  • You can - if they increase the price mid contract you can terminate without penalty

If it's TV only I don't think you can cancel early.

"If you're within your minimum term for a TV contract though, unfortunately you CAN'T exit it penalty-free as a result of these price changes. You could ask to switch to one of Sky's new TV packages but this is unlikely to save you much as you'll pay £25/mth for the basic Entertainment bundle (or £20/mth if you commit to an 18-month contract)."

I renewed my 18month contract at the weekend and fairly sure that it was read out to me that you couldnt cancel during the contract even if prices rise. Thismay be a new condition and i am quite happy to be corrected.
Op is there nothing you could sell or pawn just to get your last few months payment.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Wrong as I stated before. You cannot leave penalty free if you only get TV, there has been a change in T&C's a change they seem to have sneaked in... But my fault for not reading the T&C"s. I am sure this has caught many people out. If I am wrong feel free to quote from Sky's T&C's.
  • OP,

Your first move should be to call Sky, advise them that your circumstances have changed and that you can no longer afford the payments.

See what they offer first - not in there interests to spend money tried to get blood out of a stone.

THIS. I did this some time ago when I became unemployed due to ill health. I'd been a Sky customer for several years and they gave me 3 months completely free and said to ring them at the end of that if my circumstances hadn't changed. Sky want to retain customers and are quite flexible, probably one of the most flexible companies out there.
