You can if you want to accelerate the wear even faster as with a worn oil pump thicker oil just increases the time it will take to send oil up to the camshaft at the top of the engine spinning away with zero lubrication after being parked overnight.

But once at temp the engine internals that are no longer to factory tolerances will appreciate the thicker oil. And your car will burn through less of it.

In any case 5w30 is hardly sludge, I doubt the OP would notice any difference whatsoever.

It won't make the slightest bit of difference. Do your pocket and the environment a favour and use what you've got. You're already doing a lot better than a lot by actually changing the oil.

No they won't, that is an old wives tale people with knackered engines tell themselves to avoid the truth that the engine is shot and needs repairing. And it won't burn through less of it either. And even if your claim did have any validity that engine has done tens of thousands of revolutions by the time the oil gets up to temp.

Their prices don't seem anywhere as good as other online retailers like carparts4less for example. Am I missing something?

Carports for less don’t sell genuine Honda stuff.

Cox is good for genuine filters, disks pads etc. Oil I would get elsewhere. Hondas of that age were recommended Castrol Fully Synthetic.

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • For 7 years I used the wrong oil according to the owner's manual. As long as the bottle read Diesel I used it. During that time it never failed me once and the current owner is driving it without any issues. The car is now 15 years old and drives as well as any new car. The only problem was the steering felt a bit heavy.

Point is, I don't think the engine oil is a big deal with it comes to Honda's.

Go onto the Castrol site and enter your car details & I think you will find that 5/30 is OK.
On my Honda Castrol also say 5/30 is OK for my engine (1.8 i-Vtec) but Honda now recommend 0/30 for mine.
Lot of discussion on some of the Honda forums about this (that I have read) and opinion is divided, like you I had 5/30 to hand so used that which was Castrol.

Ive owned both our cars for nearly 10 years now, and always used cheap fully synthetic oil from Amazon (£20 for 5 litres) in both. Never had a problem, have it changed yearly (I do it myself most of the time as its an easy job to do)
  • I used 5W-30 in the end.
