In addition to that antennas are directional. A vertical antenna will output a signal over 360 degrees but a horizontal single element antenna would only receive decently at right angles to the orientation of the antenna - i,e if it was running North-South it would receive best East-West with any signals from the north and south being attenuated 30/40/50dB or more effectively making them non-existent unless you were on top of the transmitter.

The internal aerials of the B310 I use are cross polarised (I've had one apart) and the strongest signal received seems to correspond to turning the unit so that the horizontal aerial is fully broadside to the transmitter.0 -
