Alliance & Leicester online banking problem

I am trying to move some money from my current account to my sainsbury's online savings account, but when i make the transfer it doesn't go through.

I think it has something to do with the fact that the sainsbury's account no starts with a 0, i also had this problem when i tried to transfer money to a halifax which also has a 0 for the first didgit of the account no in the end i gave up and sent the money from natwest. Has anyone else had problems transfering money from Alliance & Leicester?

I didn't have any problems making a monthly standing order payment from A&L to a Barclays account starting with a zero, so I don't think that can be a problem in and of itself.

What exactly happens when you try to make a payment? Does it bring up an error or does it accept it but not debit your account, etc? Does the account you are trying to send to get added to your 'payees' and appear in the quick transfer dropdown?

LOL Well if they do then I must be owe them a fortune after regularly transferring money for the last few months from my A+L current account to A+L Basic Cash Account and also to accounts held with Halifax, Natwest and Royal Bank Of Scotland.

    how sweet ;)
  • re OP's original question, it might be worth double checking the number of digits in the account number - I have a savings account with Coventry BS which has a nine digit account number and their instructions are to drop the first digit when arranging payments as the banking system only accepts 8!

If you are still having problems, give the Internet Helpdesk Telephone 0845 300 2562 a call and get them to set it up.

  • For some reason, the A & L payment system drops the zero from the start of the account number.

I've tried a £5 payment to Sainsbury's and it shows as pending; let's see what happens.

Tried calling the internet helpdesk, but they seem more interested in entertaining me with a guitar solo ! ;)
