  • Peso are the better option. The main problem is getting small demonination pesos in the UK. When I tried both Marks and Spencer and Tesco travel bureaus neither could help. Maybe someone knows where you might be able to buy smaller demonination peso from one of the establish bureaus where you will get a good exchange rate.

I took peso and US dollars.
The hotel I stayed were happy to change peso notes to smaller denominations
  • Don't take US dollars you will get a very poor exchange rate peso are a much better option if buying any goods or paying for taxis etc. Some place will not accept dollars, maybe for political reasons!! or they don't want the bother of exchanging them to Peso themselves. US dollars OK for tips the staff will accept anything. Maybe if you are looking for smaller denominations a travel bureau can get hold of some for you if you give them plenty of notice. However you are then unlikely to get the much better ordering on line colect at the store rate.

My private taxi transfer from Cancun to Playa del Carmen was cheaper in US$ than peso and my excursions were cheaper in US$ than peso ( this was 12 month ago so things might have changed) I used peso for general spends and tips
  • we found Peso to be easier. A lot of places accept Us Dollars but the exchange rate will vary enormously. Some you may but mostly you will lose. TUI are on of the few airlines where the exit price at the airport is not included in the price of the ticket. I believe this may change later this year.
