What Currency to take to Mexico

We are going on an all inclusive package holiday to Mexico in May and we were wondering whether to take US dollars or Mexican Pesos or a mixture of both. Do tali’s and small shops accept dollars and if so are they likely to give you a poor exchange rate

Pesos....why take dollars and get stung for exchange rate0
-
Are US$ accepted in Mexico?
They were once, but were then forbidden due to money laundering by drug cartels using US$?
The law may have changed again.

i thought US dollars were accepted, certainly in hotels, but the exchange rate you would receive is poor.0

Why would you even contemplate taking US dollars ?0

We took Peso's at the end of last year.
No quibbling about whether they are accepted, and no worries about exchange rates.0 -
Both are taken, but you'll get a much better exchange rate for using pesos.0

When your money is in pounds and the national currency of Mexico is pesos, forget about dollars - unless you want to lose money twice in the conversion...Evolution, not revolution0

When you pay your exit fee at Cancun airport do you pay in Pesos. I thought about taking a small amount of US dollars for tips as I believe they are more in demand.0

Pesos, forget the USD.
When we were in Mexico last year there was a sign in the hotel saying We Don't want your Dollars0 -
We took both last year. We couldn't pre-order low denomination notes in pesos like we could for dollars - and we wanted those low denomination notes for tips. Staff will happily take dollars if you can't tip in pesos. I agree it's not ideal but it's better than not tipping at all as wages there are very low (around $8 a day for hotel staff, from what I've read).
We also booked a private tour that was expected to be paid in dollars.
It depends which airline you fly with as to whether there is a departure tax - most include it in the airfare but TUI don't.0
