The carpets will insulate. What temperature is the heating set at?

It doesn't use any energy when its switched off.

The kitchen /diner is the more expensive area - I would expect that area to have a thermostat set at about 20 deg with the bedrooms at 16/17

Your hot water tank will have two heaters - the one at the bottom should be on at all times and will heat the tank 0130 - 0830 at this time of year; 0030 - 0730 during BST. The top element should be switched OFF unless you run out of hot water.

This is very helpful. I believe this is similar to what we are doing but tomorrow I plan on running som etests to make sure the system is doing what we actually think it is. It would be great if this fixes it!

Ideal temperature for UFH is 19-20C. Mine here is 20C and have lovely warm feet. Is your kitchen tiled floor, as that will hold the heat for longer?

  • We only have it on for 2 hours at a time twice a day - we would never dream of having it on all the time
  • Ah I didn't realise there was an optimal temp for underfloor. Unfortunately the floor is laminate though.

That is probably where a lot of your energy is going. With UFH it needs to be fairly balanced all the time to keep a constant heat. Cut down to 20C and see if that helps, as you are trying to reheat a floor mass all the time.

Is the underfloor heating set in the slab? (Is it not meant to act as a storage heater?)

If so, then you should set it to come on every night, on a thermostat, and just put on a fire later in the day if you get cold.

Sorry, did not realise it was laminate as that is also a insulator as well
