Doors should swing into the room.

Is that some kind of law I don't know about?
  • From my kitchen to the hallway there is a boxed in sliding door - is that a possibility?

Swing it into the kitchen, a door left open into a hallway is a rare sight as it's not supposed to be that way.

A kitchen door opening into a hall isn't the worst offence in the world! My friend has a front door that opens outwards. It would annoy me, but there's no alternative given her house layout (old converted building). Sometimes you just have to adapt.

  • Just put the door in today. Swings into the kitchen. We have plenty of space. Remodel of an 1980's kitchen will expand space to a 25' x 20' kitchen. Great advice from all. Thanks for all the posts!

I got a new front door last year and it opens outwards - it actually makes a big positive difference to the usability of our porch (and now actually opens properly rather than banging into the doorstep of the original front door into the house). It just confuses any delivery people who stand in the space it opens into...

A porch is different though, it helps to protect from the weather. An outward opening front door doesn't do much to protect a room when opened and it's raining or windy or both.
