Kitchen Door Swing

Options
I'm adding a door between the kitchen and a hallway that leads to to the bedrooms and bathrooms. Which way should it swing? Into kitchen or into hallway? Either way it could swing open flat against a wall.

  • Stick a double action hinge on there. Best of both worlds! And if it hasn't got a window, it could become a mega interesting game!

Or put the hinges on the top, like a giant cat flap!

Without seeing how it impacts the existing setup, it's quite difficult to say.

Whichever way you want it to swing. It's normal for doors to swing into a room but it's not compulsory.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • A hallway is probably always going to be dead space whereas it's feasible you might want to change the layout of things in the kitchen at some point in the future? I'd have it swinging into the hallway for that reason.
  • Good thoughts on using the hall's dead space. May end up going with having it swing into the kitchen because that's the door I bought. Sounds like it will be ok.

+1 for swing into dead space.

Also, if the kitchen should catch fire, which way does the door need to swing to get the heck out fastest? As I think safety matters.

My Dad changed the swing of the kitchen door to open into the hallway. I can't imagine what it was like before in the kitchen as the room is tiny as it is.

We've done the same and it's made a great difference to the kitchen even though ours is a reasonable size.

Swing it into the kitchen, a door left open into a hallway is a rare sight as it's not supposed to be that way.
Doors should swing into the room.
