Can you switch too quickly?

I got my renewal notice, from Eon, on Saturday, and went straight to MSE and switched to SSe. My original contract is due to run to 26th March. SSe have said the switch will take place on 5th March thereby making me pay higher prices for 3 extra weeks. Should I cancel the switch and try again later, or should I be charged my original tariff?

You made a decision to apply for a switch and chose another tariff to switch to, and so it is correct that if you do not cancel the switch then you will be charged according to the terms of that tariff from the date when your account opens.

It is a strategic decision as to whether staying with your original, and cheaper, tariff until or even after its expiry will be more beneficial than choosing a deal early in the 6 or 7 weeks that you have without risk of a penalty.

On my last switch I calculated that the cost to me was about £1 per week, which I was prepared to accept for the certainty of the choosing the deal that I opted for, as well as the cashback that would follow. But it is your choice, and it would have been better to weigh up those consequences before rushing to switch. It is now your choice if you wish to cancel, and then unravel the situation before switching again.

If you do cancel with SSE, there is the possibility that the SSE tariff will not available in a few weeks time.
Companies change their tariffs all the time.

Your thread from yesterday created with one of your AE accounts

  • I have cancelled the switch to SSe and am staying with Eon, they have an exclusive tariff, to get you to stay. This is marginally cheaper over a year, but means I will not be paying higher rates for 3 weeks that I don't need to
