I agree with JonnyGee. If it was a simple notification of closure, surely you wouldn't be locked out of everything and unable to get your balance transferred elsewhere.

Hopefully branch will be able to give you some answers, but from what i read on other threads on here, they are usually less than helpful with "computer says no" responses. Good Luck.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Although it is within their power to close your account, I think it was unfair for them to remove access to your card and online banking before the date of the account closure, alongside giving you a very short time frame to collect the money (presuming this has to be done in a branch).

If the account was closed purely for business reasons, they should have made it easy for you to clear the balance first and there was no need to prematurely suspend your account access.

It is very unfair, but I confirm that this is RBS's policy because they did the same to me a year ago. Account frozen immediately, card stopped working, internet banking and mobile app both cancelled, unable to switch the account elsewhere and 14 days notice to visit a branch and get my money back.

In my case, I think it was because I'd used RBS accounts as donor accounts for switching too many times and they didn't want me anymore. I'd just tried to switch to NatWest and it probably rang alarm bells. If they wanted to close my account, fair enough, but they shouldn't have frozen it and they should have let me transfer the money out instead of having to go and collect it in person.

How have you been operating the account? Is it used frequently, always in credit, and with funds flowing through it, or is it normally empty or overdrawn, or have you had some unusual payments going through it?
  • No just normal mine & kids benefits going in

They do not want you. So switch out and move ASAP.
Pick one that is offering a nice bribe to move too.

  • Hi Ryan and others,

Can anyone please give me some info regarding the same issue I'm facing.
My RBS account has been frozen, internet banking, card, cheque book.. everything is blocked.
Once i contacted my bank today they told me that a letter Is on the way, however, they informed me that they can no longer offer me banking services and that my account is closing. Also that I need to contact the bank again in 14 x days time, upon which they will inform me how to get my money back from the bank. Also, the bank staff mentioned that they can hold my money for up to 60 x days.

I am not concerned about the closure of account, but I want my money at earliest, because I have to pay bills and I have to travel out of UK on 2 Jan 2020. Can you please guide me about the procedure involved to get my money?
How long does it Take? And do I have to get the cash from the branch or it the money transferred to someone else's bank account?

What has 60 days got to do in this?

Looking forward for a reply that may get me out of this confusion and inconvenience.

As the bank have already told you. No one can give any further info.

You will just have to go to a branch after the 14 days. There is nothing else you can do.
