Norwegian posted a £300M loss. Even Ryanair lost 19M this quarter, their first loss in 5 years (although this is the quieter winter quarter).
I suspect a price war for summer. Whether logical or not, BREXIT is having an impact on sales0 -
The airline operation of Thomas Cook actually made a very healthy profit last year, looks as if they may be looking to offload a profitable part of the business to prop up the rest of it, or pay down some of their huge debt.
As a tour operator though they would still need the airline seats, so would have to buy in the capacity. That said, they've been making increasing use of lease in aircraft the last few years from Latvia/Lithuania - paint the aircraft in full Thomas Cook colours, use British Thomas Cook cabin crew, and I bet most punters don't know the difference and certainly don't care.0 -
I reckon Jet2 have made significant inroads into Thomas Cook's (and TUI's) share of the package holiday market.
If TC sell off their airline in favour of developing own hotels they'll just become another chain like Rui and Iberostar etc.
I suspect that the majority of UK holidaymakers still prefer the "all in one" package that Jet2, TC and TUI offer - although it is interesting to see that the latter pair also now use other airline's for flights.
Last year we did a week on a TUI package to Mallorca flying on a Thomas Cook plane.
The bottom line is that there are too many airlines in this sector chasing too few passengers.0
