  • You and your sister need to stand strong against them. Change the locks and make sure you tell the police they are not tenants.

Can their status change from lodgers to tenants because they have more than a year living at the address? And also will the fact that they receive mail at the adress changes anything..?

No and no. They are lodgers because they do not have exclusive use of the property (you live there). Many lodgers have their mail sent to the place they rent a room at (because hey, they live there), doesn't make a lick of difference.

They are lodgers and do not have the right to remain in the property once their notice has expired.
  • I have read everything I could find on the internet, I received the same answer from Citizen Advice as well..

And the last solicitor to whom I spoke about this told me they are tenants because they stayed more than a year with us which is confusing me since I can’t find anything related to it anywhere online..
  • I would write a letter to the senior police officer at your local station.
Ask them to clarify what was said etc.

That's because it's nonsense. However, the fact that you have received such fundamentally incorrect advice from a solicitor and the police are apparently taking it upon themselves to intervene in a civil dispute suggests to me that this is either a wind-up, or you are leaving out some very significant parts of the story.

Your Lodgers, are they named on your Tenancy Agreement?

  • I’m not leaving out anything from the story. We have tried talking to them nicely at first and nothing. We told them on the 14th of January that we wanted them lo leave by the end of the month since there were swearings on both parts ans the fact that we don’t get along anymore mostly because of cleaning issues, they’re barely even talking to us. On the 30th of January we asked them if they found anything and what time ar they going the following day and they said they didn’t find anything. We agreed to let them stay only until the 5th of this month since we needed the room and that we would pay them the difference money from their deposit, again they didn’t found anything and they are not going. The following day, on the 6th we changed the locks and I ended up with the police at my workplace saying someone need to let them back inside the house. They asked about the house situation and I told them we are renting from an agency and we are subletting the lodgers room and even that is illegal according to the police..

Subletting isn't illegal. Your LL might not allow it but it isn't illegal.
