A good policy is to SORN the car before you ring the scrapper. SORN lasts indefinitely so it isn't a problem if the scrapper forgets to inform DVLA.0

Thanks everyone,
I have decided that the safest thing to do was to pay the fine as I really don't want to appear in court over £80. Contacted the guy that scrapped my car and he said that it is really bizarre and that he had never seen it before. Also I think that my car is still out there somewhere as he couldn't even provide me with proof that it's been destroyed!
Tell Facebook man he needs to show you the evidence the car was scrapped otherwise he owes you£80.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Whether the car was scrapped or not is irrelevant. The OP sold it. What the buyer did is not the OP's concern.
The OP's actual issue is simply that they failed to correctly do their part of the keeper change, so the VED didn't get refunded.0 -

And you believed him, even though he can'r provide a certificate of destruction?
Have you written now to DVLA confirming the sale of the vehicle? If you don't, the fines and tickets will keep coming. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
At the end of the day you didn't know what he would do with the car so the least you should have done was notify the DVLA by going online at

If you wrote it off in an accident you may want to inform your insurance company, if you have to claim in the future it may cause issues.0
