I was sold food that is past its use by date

I have just bought a cottage pie ready meal for my lunch from my local supermarket, then when I got home I noticed that it is past it’s “use by” date by 3 days. There were more pies on the shelf that I’m concerned are also out of date, that they are selling to consumers. I obviously haven’t consumed it, but I am wondering what to do in terms of reporting/ getting my money back.
Anyone had a similar experience/know what to do in this instance?
Many thanks,
Tilly

My cunning strategy would be to pop back to the shop and ask for a refund or to exchange it.

Or just cook it properly and hope for the best. Use by dates are fairly conservative, things don't suddenly turn septic at midnight.
  • I wouldn't make a special trip back to the store just to return the item.
Provided I had access to a digital camera and computer, I would take a pic of the package details and send an e-mail to the supermarket concerned and they will probably advise you to bin the food and send you a voucher to cover the cost (and maybe a bit extra on top).
  • Great thank you! I’ll do this first. :)

True but 3 days past the use by date might be pushing it a bit for something containing meat if it was just chilled and not a frozen product.

I'm pretty sure there will be a section on the packet somewhere that outlines exactly what you should do given you are not totally satisfied with the product.

I am so impressed that a newbie found the Consumer Rights board to post their question!
