Driving to sweden for 6 months.
My Son 22 is off to work in Sweden for 6 months. He is thinking about driving there so he will have his own transport. It will be from April. He has a freelander 1 and is experienced driving in all sorts of conditions etc. Im aware that his current car insurance policy wont cover him for the 6 months but not sure what he would need to do to have adequate insurance. I think he would be better flying and using public transport as the bank on Mum & Dad wont be available to sort out car repairs etc while he is away. The car has new brakes and tyres so he should be ok.....I hope! Any advice would be welcome.

If he's going to be resident in Sweden for that six months, then he'd need to register locally anyway.
Remember there's no direct ferries to Scandinavia now - you need to drive through the low countries, Denmark, and up. It's a LOOOONG way. At least April-October he won't need winter tyres by law, but if he arrives before the end of March, or is still there into December, he will.
(As far as the bank of Mum and Dad funding his car repairs goes... he's in his 20s and working!)0 -
Thanks, its a very long drive 1300 miles:eek:! He is doing a course while out there so being sponsored by the company in Sweden. He has M&S tyres on the freelander anyway so that's ok. So I'm not sure that he will be a resident. I will ask him. I have no idea about working, Living abroad, and typically expects Mum to have all the answers!!:rotfl:0

This might be a very painful suggestion for you, but you have to let your son break free. You may have avoided this in the past, bit it could well be that now is the time to introduce your son to a new partner, one that he will love, and look up to with a new reverence. It can be hard though because he may not see you, his Mum, in the same light as before. Now is the time to sit down with your son and show him... Google (other search engines are available).0

Bear in mind he'll be in an old UK spec car that's wrong hand side, so it's going to be a bit awkward at times and spare parts could take a while to arrive. It's also a long drive there.
Can the company in Sweden arrange a car for him? Does he actually need one?
If it was me, I'd rather leave the Freelander in the UK, fly directly over there, and hire an appropriate car over there.0 -
I would help but we drove to Sweden via the low countries in 1972 so it may have changed a bit.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Not necessarily, they must be manufactured for Winter conditions, some M&S tyres are not. If they have the 3 peaks & snowflake symbol they are Winter tyres.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

...of course, even the six month temporary import may vary post-end-March... Not to mention insurance and IDP.0

No it isn't. Mud and Snow Tyres aren't automatically winter tyres. They have to have specific markings on them stating they're M+S or an Alpine marking or he can't use them. There is also a minimum tread depth of 3mm.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Thanks, he does use google etc but this is a massive step and sometimes asking another grown up is better than google! However the grown up he ask then uses google:rotfl:0
