Normal Energy Consumption?
Hi folks,
Wondered if you could help me with something.
Mid-2018 my wife and I moved into a new build house, it's 4 bedroom detached with underfloor heating downstairs and radiator heating upstairs.
We've had a bit of back and forth with the developer and the plumber as the downstairs heating isn't working properly. Essentially the lounge can't get above 18 degrees C despite the thermostat being turned up to 25 (just to get it moving upward!). We've done a multitude of things, like leaving the central heating on downstairs for 24 hours to see if it was just a timing issue. However we've had no joy.
Our gas consumption is over 100kWh per day!
Our usual "routine" is heating comes on at 6:30am for 3 hours. Most rooms at 18, except for the lounge trying to get to 21.
Then down to 15 for the rest of the day, until 6:00pm where it goes back to 18 and 21 until 10:00pm. After that it goes off until the next day at 6:30am.
We have a shower each per day, occasionally two, depending on whether we go to the gym or not.
Does 100kWh sound about right for this kind of routine?
I have a feeling that the downstairs heating is constantly putting demand on the boiler because it can't get up to temperature. Wanted to check my assumption!
Any help/advice would be appreciated.

What was the thermostat set at and what is the boiler temperature of the water in the UFH and radiators?
I am using about 80 kWh a day in a 3 bed semi with the heating set at 21 deg c from 07:45 to 23:300 -
Hi - for an older 4 bed house 100kWh per day at the coldest time of year sounds OKish to me and it's probably not ridiculously out of the ball park (but on the high side) for a big new build 4 bed (which will be well insulated due to current building regulations).
Having said that, if you can't get the house up to temperature downstairs that in itself would show that there is a problem with the heating system that needs fixing - i.e. it's either faulty or not correctly sized or installed.
If the boiler is too big for the underfloor heating then it could be constantly switching itself on and off which would be inefficient and lead to high bills, but that's only one of many things that could be wrong.0 -
The heating system may need balancing so you get a proper flow (even temps) throughout the system. I thnk a reliable heating engineer to look over the system is in order.0

100kWH at 3p is £3 a day. Not excessive buton the high side.
Underfloor heating is slow to respond to thermostats - it acts like a storage radiator building up heat and releasing it slowly.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
I’m using 235kwh of gas a day, 52000kwh per year approx and have been told by supplier this is normal, am I being paranoid for thinking I’m heating the whole street or does it seam excessive?0

Toomuchgas - yes is the short answer - if that's based on a years readings. Depends where you live, but for comparison I use 12,500kwh of gas per year in a 3 bed mid terrace. Bear in mind most of your gas will be used between about October and March time - don't just take what you used in January, for example, and multiply by 12. My heating usually gets turned off from 1st April to 30th September, and other than a bit of hot water and hobs on the cooker, very little gas is used. As much as two thirds of my gas would be used in winter. If your usage is based on 12 months of readings, then they sound way too high.0

TMG - its best to start your own thread so that help for you doesn't get confused with that for jammell.
It depends. Mansion or flat, lifestyle.
First check is meter readings - Actual or Estimated; second meter detail - is the meter a metric one (m3) or imperial (ft3) do the details agree with whats on the bill ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
I use 12,500 kWh of gas per year in a 3 bed mid terrace.
Is that with the heating on all day during the winter or timed?
I use about 14,500 kWh of gas a year with my heating on from 07:45 to 23:30 for 6 months0 -
Thanks everyone, will start a new thread. It’s a 4 bed detached, heating on 10-11 hours a day, based on actual readings , meter imperial.0
