Freezer in own room in a shared house

Good morning

I'd like some advice on what I'm allowed to do

I have a freezer in my room in my current place. I'm moving to a new place. It's self contained rooms in a house but the kitchen is shared.

Would there be any problem legally or otherwise with me having my own freezer in my room?

I asked initially and she said she didn't know and she would check. It didn't seem like she did check anything and 2 seconds later she said I couldn't as it goes against health and safety. Is that right?

The only reason I can think of for that might be because it's an electrical item so could be a fire risk - they don't allow electric heaters, which I can understand - but in the case of the freezer lots of things are electric. Why am I allowed a TV, a laptop or PC, a lamp or other electrics. Right?

Any advice would be apprecated! :)

Thank you

No specific legal problem I can think of, but I doubt you can force a landlord to accept that you'll have a freezer in your room.

Perhaps she is worried abourt repeat of the hotpoint at Grenfell? But as house is shared who is going to pay the electric for it? Sorry but it's up to that landlord

No issues legally with this. Your landlord could not stop you doing so.

(they could ofcourse subsequently evict if necessary; but that is the same as any other issue)

It really isn't. The OP is a tenant and entitled to quiet enjoyment of their property (even if that is a single room)

    "Health and safety".

Second only to "Human Rights" in the list of backside-covering "I don't think so, but I can't be bothered to check." excuses.

Think 'Data Protection' is in first place :)

Nah, since GDPR it's probably accurate.
  • This didn't even cross our mind when we not only added a small freezer but also a chiller fridge to the room that our student offspring rents whilst away.

I see it no differently to adding computer equipment in terms of "electrical health and safety"...but I guess each to their own and if the LL has a bee in their bonnet about it theres not much you can do....

  • Thanks guys. I knew it wasn't just me thinking that it's a bit outrageous. I should have just taken it there probably wouldn't have been a problem in the first place.

Well, it's got to go somewhere! I'll figure out a way to make it work.

Thanks! Some of the replies have made me proper chuckle :D
