Faulty new door

Briefly, had a new door fitted about a month ago. This was faulty,damaged and additionally the firm caused damage when fitting it.

Firm agreed it was disgraceful (wouldn't even shut at one point) and agreed to replace it. Incidentally I complained the first day it was fitted. Retailer agreed a new door would be supplied and the surrounding damage rectified.

New door now been fitted and although some of the repairs around the door (included in the original fitting) are now better, the actual door fitted, on closer inspection when the fitter left, is worse than the first door. I would go so far as to say I don't even think it is a new door - it looks as though it has been fitted before and somebody has rejected it.

The corner of the door is badly chipped and has been filled in and painted over (so that I could not see it on initial inspection), the bottom of the door underneath is flaking off (again could not be seen on first inspection). The number plate has not been fitted centrally and neither has the door handle and the knocker is broken.

I immediately contacted the retailer (the same day it was fitted) and I am now waiting for them to supposedly come to inspect the door. However, they initially said they would send out the same fitter to inspect it - which I refused as clearly he is not going to agree his workmanship is poor. I am losing confidence in the retailer as they are now very unhelpful.

Can anyone tell me what are my rights. I have a brief idea, having looked things up online, but if I get a refund I am left with no front door!!! Can I demand a replacement as it would not be possible to fix most of the damage without using fillers etc., and who wants a new door full of filler? The only thing that could be rectified satisfactorily would be the door knocker.

Incidentally, the fitter asked me to sign a computer stating he had been out, which I did, but I am now worried as he did not show me what I was signing as I could not see it on the computer.

I would be happy for a further new door to be fitted - hopefully with more care this time. Can I demand this?

Thanks for your help

    Your rights are protected under trading law. They have provided you with goods that were damaged in the first place. You also are required to give them opportunity to put right their wrongs. Don't give up on it and have any dealings with them written down. Which firm did you get the door from?

    If the goods (and services) still fail to conform to contract after a single remedy (repair) attempt then:

    a) You can require the supplier to remove all goods, make good any damage, and provide a full refund of all monies paid;

    b) You can agree with the supplier a more cost-effective remedy (another replacement door, supplied and fitted at their cost)

    Unless the supplier is a total idiot then they'll agree with option b.

    (IMHO)

    Are they registered with an installation regulation organisation? If so go to them for advice or support. My neighbor went to FENSA about their dodgy window installations and got free replacement.. a bad online review will probably shake them up too!!
