House numbers/signs - material!?

Options
Hi all

I want to get a personalised house number for the front of my house, but am completely overwhelmed by the choice of material of them - granite, acrylic, aluminium, slate, glass.. and so on!

Can somebody advise on the best quality/longest lasting material for a house number? And advise me on how you then attach the house number (e.g drilled or something else)? I have a red brick house if that helps.

    Reminds me of the riddle:

For what will you be charged one pound for one, one pound for two, two pounds for twenty and three pounds for three hundred?

Anyway, it comes down to personal choice. Almost any material will probably last forever - well, as long as you're likely to live in the house, anyway - so it's down to what you think will look nice. Some poor quality metal numbers may suffer from corrosion and some materials might need cleaning more often than others. Most will need affixing by drilling but it's a simple job with the right drill bit and real plugs. Use screws that won't corrode.

Something personalised is exactly that, personal.

Choose based on your own taste, the style of the property (building materials/ front door colour/garden feature), and something that can be clearly read from the pavement, ideally even in the dark.

  • Thanks both. Acrylic would suit my house style more but I was sceptical as to wether an acrylic sign would be durable.

Depends on what you buy/ where from. Some plastic sheeting is marketed as suitable for outdoor use and some is not.

Durability depends on various factors, including the material (polycarbonate/ PET/ acrylic), thickness (many available 2mm up), any protective coatings applied (UV resistance/ scratch resistance), how exposed the position is, and how the user treats the product when fitting and when cleaning.

I had a slate sign done last summer by this provider of engraved slate house signs, and so far, the material is proving to be durable. As for the installation, I would advise having professionals do it for you to avoid messing it up, but drilling would be the safest way for this.

We have an acrylic one that we bought when we moved into this house last April. It looks good, suits the house and is still as good as when we put it up. It has a quick wipe over with a damp cloth every now and again.

There is a massive choice of styles to choose from. We opted for a simple rectangular sign with the house number in large font, the street name below in smaller font and butterflies to one side as all the road names on the estate are named after butterflies.

Acrylic looks smart and is relatively inexpensive.

I've been looking for something of this style and quality (different words and image, of course!), but cannot shell out £60-£200 for a sign even if it's a forever one!

So much to read, so little time.
  • We took care of our house's repair for a year, and I told my wife that the last element we would install would be the house sign.
