That suggests if the customer (ie you) says "NO, you can't come and fit them", they can stay on that tariff.

Ah, no, I knew he was talking about technical limitations for installation there (e.g. no mobile signal), as per the T&C in Fix Online v8.

Thanks Malc, you've convinced me to stay with E.ON. I will refer to your post in future if I have any hassles.
    @Quentin
There's no technical reason that I know of that a smart meter can't be fitted at my property, so I doubt that one would apply to me.

The main thing I wanted to clarify is that the worst that can happen if I refuse to have a smart meter fitted under Fix Online v8 is that I would be moved to another package without any penalty, and that's been made clear.

You're welcome oliverbrown. Glad I was able to clarify and thanks for staying with us. Please feel free to use my posts if you need to.

brewerdave is correct. Eon do not charge an exit fee if you move tariff but stay with them, only if you switch supplier.

Regarding the T & C of having a smart meter fitted on certain tariffs then that's a different matter but when asked to switch to a smart meter by Eon I asked them if they were fitting Smet 1 or Smet 2 meters and they said smet 1 at the moment (unless they've changed that policy recently) so if you later switch supplier the smart meter will become a dumb meter.

Perhaps the Eon rep could clarify these points to keep us up to date.

Don t be so sure of that. According to Utility Week the latest SMETS 1 meters will be able to operate smart when switched..They will probably be lacking in the SMETS2 meters security against hacking but I can live with that...
So far in the decade that smart meters have been installed around the world, and in the UK I have not heard of any serious hacking attacks on smart meters.

This is not quite the point!

    The ts + cs state:

This is not the same as "if you refuse to have this fitted then ignore this!"

Doesn't your statement mean that if for some technical reason you cannot fit smart meters the customer will be able to stay on the tariff or are you really saying customers refusing smart meters can ignore that condition?
    Quentin wrote: »
    Maybe

However that's not the point made by the rep!

Hello Quentin and sorry if I wasn't clear.

Where customers have opted for Fix Online v8 and aren't eligible for smart meters due to the technical reasons I mentioned in post #15 above, they'll be able to stay on the tariff if they wish.

Hope this is clearer. Let me know if not as happy to help.

Happy to report I have not yet been contacted about smart meters since signing up to Fix Online.

I have also noticed a softening in the wording on smart meters for Fix Online on E.on's website.

    Previously:
Agree to have smart meters installed

By choosing this tariff you agree to be contacted, where eligible, for the installation of a smart meter and have one installed for each fuel we supply. You will stay on this tariff if we aren't able to fit a smart meter.

    Now:
    Free Smart Installation

We'll contact you to offer a free smart meter installation if eligible.

Maybe E.on are getting the message that pressurising people into smart meters is unwelcome?

If you agree to the smart meter being fitted but the fitter can not fit it due to the access of the surrounding area of the existing meters is this classed as a technical reason?

And would you be allowed to stay on the online fix v16 tariff?

    Thank You.

Hello oliverbrown and thanks for the update.

This isn't surprising. As I mentioned above, I didn't expect this to happen straightaway given the amount of jobs we're booking at the moment.

Also happy to confirm, as you've posted, the wording relating to smart meters has been changed. This was partly due to feedback from these Forums passed on by Helena and I.

    Thanks all for your input.

    Hello metrobus and don't worry.

Where technicians are unable to fit smart meters, customers can stay on the same tariff.

    Hi Malc,

In the current version of the T&C it says this:
With this tariff you agree to be contacted during the tariff term for the installation of a smart meter. You're still eligible for this tariff if you currently have a smart meter installed or your property is currently ineligible for a smart meter.

There is no condition about agreeing to have a smart meter installed, just "agree to be contacted" about one.

Can you therefore confirm that agreeing to a smart meter if one is offered is no longer a condition to staying on Fix Online v20?

Hello oliverbrown and I've just posted about Fix Online version 20 as well as our wider policy on smart tariffs on the thread below.
