    Hi Duck,

I did check the previous MOTs when I bought it - there was no mention of corrosion and as I say - it was MOTd a week to two weeks before we bought it and passed clear.

What did the mot before that one say?

If there's no mention of rust then that ones either dodgy too or yourmechanic is wrong.

No - I just can't see what garage they were all performed at. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

I know that one way or another we've bought a lemon, despite our very best efforts. As I said, we're not "car people", we just wanted a safe family car - which is why we went to a dealer rather than Jimmy down t'road and why we went for something with a clean MOT.

I just want to know if the level of damage outlined in the report could conceivably have occurred in the space of 11 months very standard use (approx 7,000 miles, no rallying, no off-roading) from an apparently healthy state.

Thanks guys, I do really appreciate the time you're taking to respond.

January 2017 - Passed with the following advisories:
    • Offside rear tyre wearing down on outer edge.
    • Offside Rear Shock absorber has a light misting of oil.
    • Rear suspension trailing arms front bushes in poor condition.

Again - as there was no mention of any of this in the 2018 MOT we assumed all of these had been rectified.

If the test centre numbers are different on the 2017 and 18 tests then your man is wrong.

Ok - but I mean it's the 2018 one I'm really concerned with, as that's the one the dealer sold it to me on the strength of.

I do have pictures of the damage but I don't seem to be allowed to post them as my account is new.

No, you need to look at the bigger picture. No rust in 2017 or prior to that is where you need to be looking. If it's all formed from 17-18 as you're suspecting then what's to say it wasn't clear when last tested and formed over the last year?

But that's all I was asking - is it possible for a car to develop corrosion that is severe enough to fail an MOT and have the car condemned as "uneconomical to repair" in the space of 11-12 months? From a state of having apparently no corrosion at all?

Thanks again for your responses, I do appreciate it.

Check the full history online and copy and paste any advisories or fails.

Sorry, I'm really not trying to be difficult but I don't see how that will answer my question about whether the corrosion could have occurred in a 12 month period?

The garage can't refuse you take the vehicle.

Id take it to a place like weonlymot and see what they pickup. May find actual failures require some patch work around the vehicle. Sills aren't uncommon.

Seen many times advisories which come and go for a number of years. Easy to pick up faults on an old car, just doesn't necessarily mean they will be a failure the following year.
