2 laptops, second of which I upgraded with SSD to replace HDD

3 PC base units, most recent two of which I've upgraded myself with extra RAM, larger HDDs, and SSDs.

    Do you mean right now?

2 desktops and 1 tablet in use
Another 1 desktop and tablet gathering dust.

Oh, and a work laptop as well, although that is not own by myself ...

That don't count anything in the past or own by other family members.

Does anyone really keep an accurate count? I’d guesstimate since my first Compaq 286 I’ve probably had 40 or 50 laptops.

I've had dozens, starting out with a ZX81 when they were launched. I did have one PC for several years however the guts underwent perpetual upgrades so only the 3.5" floppy drive and the case were the only original things left by the end.

Yes, when you've had less than five, it's very easy to count.

The 286 was launched in 1989, 30 years ago, 360 mths, so you've had a new PC every 7 to 9 mths or so ... ?

Not as many as you have alter-egos asking inane questions on internet forums.

Not necessarily, out of my 11 (the amount is growing) laptops i had 8 in one go, but may only use one, have linux on another. The 7 were being binned and I rescued them all, and have i5 upwards and slowly get donated to the less fortunate around my area. Saying that, many are too proud to take up a free offer. :(

It was probably even less time between upgrades at the beginning as development was much quicker (and at tines I would have had 2 or even 3 machines at a time) and there were big size differences between performance machines and truly portable machines (like the Toshiba Libretto, I had the 50, 70, 100 and 110 models all in a pretty short time period).

I think only my last laptop has lasted a significant time due to a lot of internet use going to a tablet and significant improvements are much slower between models, I’ve had it about a year now.
