Electric Bill

Hi guys
Moved into my new property last month and my electric bill came to £125 ! We have the correct meter readings as i entered them myself.

When we moved in, we couldn’t figure out the hot water and radiator timers untill a week or so after moving in, and had them on constantly… could this be why ?

Thanks

Were the readings on your bill Estimated or did you submit your own at the end of the month ?

Now you've sorted your timers has your consumption dropped ?

    Submitted my own readings.

I wouldn't know as I only figured out the timers about 10 days a go. I will only know when I take my readings a month from then.

Have you switched suppliers since you moved in ?

When you say radiator/hot water timers - are these panel heaters ? Storage Heaters and the Immersion Heater have one common timer supplied by your supplier.

Yes we moved from Scottish Power to Robing Hood

Ok, the heaters are run by a timer you can adjust manually on them. The hot water I turn the economy seven switch on 3 times per week ( at the beginning it was on constantly )

Are you on an E7 tariff ? If so what is your night and day consumption.

This sounds like you have panel heaters which use on-peak electricity. If you have E7 then your immersion heater should be on 0030 - 0730 and this will cheaper that switching on during the day. Does your hot water tank have two switches ? Are they both on ?

    Yes to both.

Leave the bottom one on - every night - that will ensure you have hot water. Leave the top (boost) one off until you have an exceptional need.

You can read your meters more than once a month you know ;)
It would be sensible to read daily for a couple of weeks, then weekly for a couple of months then, when you get a handle on your use, leave it to once a month.

Thanks. I hope the next bill is lower, now that i've figured out the timers.

I should be looking at around £50 per month for a one bed flat, right ?

Perhaps .... depends on lots of things ....... insulation - double glazing, cavity walls, doors, ceilings, pipes .......... your lifestyle ......... how well you control your heating ........ how many/long showers you take .... cooking ............. for E7 you should be looking at 40% plus night use .............. tariff ............ etc
