O2 credit file mistake?

Options
I was recently turned down on my mortgage renewal despite not knowingly having adverse credit. I obtained an Experian credit report and was surprised to see many non paid marks from O2 and their debt collection team Moorcroft Group.
In August 2017 I was sent a new phone and contract from O2. It was not delivered and was returned to O2 via the courier. I called my service provider who informed me that the deal was no longer available and switched me to EE on a new contract. O2 then took £549.00 from my bank. I called them and explained what had happened. They accepted this as it all happened within their 14 day terms and returned my money followed by a bill showing the £549.00 Credit and a final bill of £0.00. All sorted...or so I thought.
Some months later I received a letter from Moorcroft saying I owed over £600.00 for an unpaid O2 debt. I disputed this and explained what had happened. More months passed and then a new bill from Moorcroft for around £150.00. Again I disputed it and asked them to send me the bill in paper form. I received it with a total of £0.00 on it. I called Moorcroft and they told me it was settled.
I then discovered marks all over my Experian report from both O2 and Moorcroft. I called Moorcroft as O2 do not have a telephone number and would not reply to emails. They asked for £44.00 which I paid as I was desperate to get a new mortgage deal and needed it sorting.
I set up a dispute on Resolver and O2 have now removed everything from my credit file but Moorcroft have not. I have had to accept a mortgage on higher interest terms which will now cost me an extra £100 per month for the next three years.
Where do I go from here? This has caused my family so much trouble as I wanted to borrow against my equity to clear credit cards but could not due to over 20 bad marks from O2 and Moorcroft.

Given you've taken out the mortgage, nowhere.

Oh. Deary. Me. I expect that had more to do with the higher mortgage interest offer. My suggestion is to get over to the Debt Free Wannabe board and post a SOA because you have to be in financial crisis to consider such a decision and usually people who are doing that are in eye watering levels of debt. Borrowing against equity to clear credit card debt is the act of the desperate.

  • Tarambor, I was actually looking for advice on getting Moorcroft to remove the default as there wasn't actually ever a default. Thanks for judging me as desperate but that was not really what I was after. Perhaps I have done my sums incorrectly but I thought paying 2% on my credit card debts over the next 3 years was better than the current 22%.

It's regrettable, but this forum is stuffed full of finger-waggers.

Your situation appears to be all too common. A question to ask is have you suffered any material loss? It appears as though you might have done, since you are now worse off than you would have been, had the mistakes you identify not been made. There is case law about this sort of thing, and both the CRA and the reporting organisation can be held liable. I suggest you have an initial consultation with a solicitor - one of these 30 minute low price consultations if you can find one.
  • It’s not finger wagging. It’s putting things right.

You need to clear the credit card debt as well - this could have been a factor for the higher rate mortgage.

What did you pay moorcroft the £44 for?

O2 have a contact number - it’s plastered all over the internet and their website so that’s not an excuse
  • Gary,
If you can find a phone number for O2 Credit Files Referrals then you have more skills than me. I have it in writing from them that they cannot be reached by phone. My credit cards are only at around 2o% of maximum so this should not adversely affect my rating. I have over 100 x my credit card bill in equity so I think it would have been fairly straight forward before the bad marks. It's not something I cant handle, it's more I would like the wrongs against me ironed out as I believe it to be unjust.
