The person who fitted it worked for the manufacturer0

Sounds more like the dealer was asked to have a shutter fitted, as your husband was able to take it to the fitters and talk to them they used a local company to fit one, hardly fitted by the vehicle manufacturer.0

I don't think the person who fitted it worked for the manufacturer. If they did, they would bee working from the same site as the selling garage. This will be a third party who was instructed to fit the shutter by the selling garage who passed on the charge to your husband probably with an extra bit of profit margin for themselves.
Is it a pickup truck with a flatbed at the back? Was a horizontal shutter fitted which covers the whole flatbed? If so, having water ingress is inevitable just by the angles and mechanisms involved.0 -
What truck are we talking about?
I'm presuming this is something like a Truckman top on a Ranger/Navara-type 4x4?
As has been said above - I think we're looking at an aftermarket top fitted by the dealer. The dealer is NOT the manufacturer.0 -
Business purchase, so consumer rights legislation doesn't apply.
Sale of Goods Act and Supply of Goods and Services Act.
Most of the Sale of Goods Act and the Supply of Goods and Services Act still applies to business-to-business contracts.
The business does not get an automatic right to a refund if a second fault occurs with a product nor is the burden of proof reversed if there is a dispute as to whether the fault was present at the time of purchase. Instead the court is likely to pick the solution they feel is most reasonable, which might be refund if the product is faulty as soon as it arrives or very shortly afterwards. If the problem occurs later or is an easily remedied problem with a service then the court may choose a free repair as a solution or replacement if that is impossible or would cause a significant inconvenience to you.
However, bear in mind that liability may be limited or excluded by the terms and conditions of a business-to-business contract.

As a temporary fix, could you not put a large plastic container (the sort you see in garden centres) in the back and store tools etc in that? Or maybe a large tarpaulin?I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0
