I know I have limited knowledge but I feel more comfortable doing things myself as much as I can rather than passing on the responsiblity to someone else (also applies to house renovations ectera/website design etc). I had this money in a regular pension and I had no way of monitoring if they were doing a good job or not.

If you mess up house renovations you stand to lose the few hundred quid that a professional will charge to fix your bodging (on top of the amount you would have paid anyway to get the job done). If you mess up your investments you stand to lose anything up to £60,000. Is that an acceptable risk to you in exchange for feeling like you're in control?

Have you considered a more passive approach with a low cost global index tracker or multi asset fund?

OP, have a read of the following article...

NB: There are alternatives to Vanguard that you could consider. Personally we have plumped for VLS 80 which suits our needs and risk profile but this obviously won't suit everyone.

Thanks, I have just moved £60,000 into it, so firstly Im trying to worrk out a sensible number of companies to invest in not to small, not too large , I was thinking about £5000 each.

Firstly I'd identify real opportunities. As this without doubt should take you time. Once in invested in a particular company. I'd have no hesitation in buying more. As running winners is a proven strategy. If the hunch turns out to be correct. Which sector of the market are you targetting capitalisation wise?

Quality of quantity is the key. For more speculative holdings I start at a minimum £2k.

I'm no expert in house renovation. I'll do small stuff like building a flatpack bookcase or whatever - but I wouldn't do my own plumbing or electricity as the risk is far too great if I get it wrong.

Possibly a good principle to carry across into investing?

Yup VLS60 and VLS80 are both very good funds with the choice depending on your circumstances. I suspect both would give most people a significantly better and more predictable long term return than trading individual shares.
