Where can I discuss individual shares

Options
I have just setup a SIPP and wanted some advice or share purchases years ago I used Montley Fool Forums but they no longer exist. I know that Money Saving Expert Forums are not primarily a place to discuss shares in individual companies so I wonder if anyone knows of an alternative, a search on Google didnt really help.

    wanted some advice
advice on investments is a regulated activity and you wont get that here. Just discussion, comment and opinion.

Personally, I wouldnt waste my time looking at any forum discussing single company shares as site population would be made up of other clueless people and those that are trying to ramp the share price.

Is your pension going to be big enough to be using shares? Most people dont use shares.
I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

If you want to see some sensible discussions on shares, funds and ITs then have a look at the forums on Citiwire. The discussions are generally quite grown up and informative and there are a number of seemingly knowledgeable regular posters (King Lodos, Alan Selwood to name but two). However, each has their own 'style' and focus so, a bit like with film reviewers, you need to judge which one seems to be in accord with your own thinking. Plus of course they are anonymous people on the internet (as am I of course :) ) so usual caveats apply.

However if you want some more 'entertaining' and sometimes quite bizarre posts (of course I am not thinking of certain Wetherspoons loving individual on the Barclays threads honestly :rotfl:) then sign up for a free ADFVN account and read the individual share comments on there, but please regard any comments on there with pinch, nay a mountain, of salt as, as has already been indicated, most posters seem to have their own agenda.
  • Thanks, I have just moved £60,000 into it, so firstly Im trying to worrk out a sensible number of companies to invest in not to small, not too large , I was thinking about £5000 each.

Sounds like you've decided that 12 is your magic number then!

I'm sure that many on here would agree with dunstonh that if you're trying to be sensible then you'd be looking at collective investments rather than individual shares, especially given your apparent lack of in-depth knowledge. What attracts you to shares rather than funds, etc?

Are you really going to try and track the financial details of 12 companies? If you want to do this why not invest most of it in a fund and use a part to invest in 1 or 2 companies

What sort of return are you hoping to achieve.

A friend of mine gets over 7% year after year on his investments through a regulate advisor

I have shares in isas and done okay.

I know I have limited knowledge but I feel more comfortable doing things myself as much as I can rather than passing on the responsiblity to someone else (also applies to house renovations ectera/website design etc). I had this money in a regular pension and I had no way of monitoring if they were doing a good job or not.

The Lemon Fool site was set up as an unofficial continuation of the Motley Fool forums - no connection to the Motley Fool company, but some of the regulars set it up trying to recreate the community:

Have you considered a more passive approach with a low cost global index tracker or multi asset fund?

Not wishing to be blunt but trust me if you are asking questions you are not up to the task of making sensible investments in individual shares.

The amount of time and effort required is substantial. I’ve been investing for over 25yrs and the nearest to an individual share I’ve got is ITs.
