Non-refundable hotel booking problems

I've just recently booked 8 days in Fairfield inn by marriot Anaheim hills, orange county. Unfortunaetly this is the wrong hotel as I've mixed it up with Fairfield inn by Marriott, Anaheim. Which is located next to Disney.
I either want to try and convince the hotel to cancel the booking with a refund or possibly changing to the Anaheim hotel whilst paying the 200 pound more this hotel was listed down as on expedia as it's the same hotel chain.
What I would like to know is, has anyone had a similar issue with getting a refund off a non-refundable booking or changing hotels within the same hotel chain?

"non refundable" you wont get a refund and i doubt you will have any joy transferring the booking either.0

have you asked who you booked with (expedia i guess) if they say no email the hotel.
you have nothing to lose0 -
It will be down to the discretion of the (wrong) hotel.
The request to cancel should be done via the booking agent (e.g. booking.com, Expedia) if used. They in turn may contact the hotelier for approval to cancel. It may also help to contact the (wrong) hotel as well and be humble and polite and explain your mistake. If they approve of the cancellation try to get a name of the person who approved or even better an email to confirm. With the time difference do this after 8am/9am when you can reach their reservation team rather than speaking to just their night front desk staff (who will likely give an automated No). If cancellation approved, this can be used to provide to the booking agent.
By all means explain the mistake and that you would like to book another Fairfield/Marriott hotel but I wouldn’t labour this point. Most are franchises and the Anaheim Hills location probably is a rival to the Anaheim one.
Finally, keep in mind it is the cheaper ‘non-refundable’ room rate you are asking them to actually cancel and refund. They don’t have to. Not saying you would be but don’t be belligerent or aggressive with them. Politeness will be key. Trip Advisor is full of people moaning that hotels will not refund non-refundable rooms and getting quite stroppy when hotels say No.0 -
How does one get a refund of a non refundable booking ?
As above, be ultra polite and play the dumb hick from the sticks card, the innocent abroad.
Good luck.0 -
I think your only choice is going to be a very expensive swop or a few 20 min taxi rides. The franchisee of the hotel you booked is unlikely to want to loose your money.0

Thankyou all for.the quick replies, I contacted expedia immediately after realising my mistake. It was stated that it was non-refundable But after explaining my problem he was told expedia would contact both hotels to possibly convince them to cancel or transfer me to the Anaheim Fairfield with the extra cost.
I have read other threads with similar problems and some have been refunded under certain circumstances.
I will keep anyone updated if interested.0 -
Please do return to update the thread with the outcome. It may well be useful to others in the future who are in a similar position and search and find this thread. Good luck.0

Yes please do as it may help others ignore people who tell you you will not get a refund when they cannot possibly know if that is true or false.
I am generally stunned but very amused by the quantity of posters on here who make ablolute statements about things when often they could not possibly know if that statement is true or false.
They could do well to learn to preface such statements with "My understanding is"
