Haggling with Magnet (Retail) - Likely Max Discounts?

Hello all :)

Mrs wants a new kitchen, we've looked around and she likes the Magnet one, and their salesman seems to know whats hes talking about and is fairly sure we're getting it from there IF they offer a good enough deal.

Basically, the quote we've had is approx £4k, 50% off our units, 10% off the worktop with appliances worth approx £800 (Magnet values) included for 'free'


Is this about as good as it gets, or is there much more to be squeezed out of this?

    Before you can decide if it's the best price you need quotes from other companies.


    The parent company nobia that makes the kitchens also owns the company that makes Benchmark and Wickes kitchens and the quality is about the same. Get quotes from them for similar stuff and you will have your answer.

  • My advice go to Magnet, etc get a design done and have a look at DIY Kitchens - https://www.diy-kitchens.com/. Fantastic kitchens with excellent prices. They have an online planner - http://planner.diy-kitchens.com. Put your design in and it will tell you the cost.
  • Magnet's 50% off is year round. 'Free' Appliances is just another marketing con. Nothing is free, you're paying for it in the total price.

    As said, get various quotes and work out the value you're getting. You're also better off choosing your own appliances from an electrical retailer.
  • The best way to negotiate is to play different suppliers off against each other. Get quotes from other kitchen suppliers and fitters (aim for as like-for-like as possible) and then take your other quotes to Magnet and ask them to beat it.

    Before you negotiate, make sure you consider what angles a salesman will use to try and avoid giving you a better price, e.g. is there something they offer which your other quotes don't? Think about ways to overcome their objection to your proposal (it's exactly what salesmen do). For example with 'free' appliances, if you don't need them be prepared to say you'd rather they match the price and keep the white goods. If they say a 'free' dishwasher is worth £500 (it's obviously not) then say that's what they should be willing to knock off the price. It's not true, but no salesman wants to admit that they inflate all the 'values', and if they're stupid enough to admit that then you can question their integrity on everything else they tell you. Keep it polite and friendly, but don't be afraid of coming across as what most people would consider 'rude' negotiating... it's not, it's business.

    If you're feeling spectacularly cheeky you could misrepresent what quotes you've had when you go to other suppliers (don't do it with the supplier you want to use, if you have to admit you don't have the price you said you did, you're in a v weak negotiating position) in order to get as low a quote as possible to take to Magnet - Now I'm not suggesting you should make a dummy quote or anything, but if it's a supplier you don't intend to use then why not blag, and blag big? "Magnet have offered to knock off £1000 if I don't take the white goods and can wait a couple months longer than usual for installation" that sort of thing... Worst they can do is say no, and that's of no consequence if you want to go elsewhere anyway!
  • Go in to the place with your research, the prices that you have had elsewhere and definitely check diy kitchens out as all their pricing is online. Then go in to Magnet and tell them the price you are willing to pay. If they want a sale then they will give you what you want or close to it 😊 Knowledge is power!

    Why not try a local firm, too?

    Our firm didn't charge for inner cupboard fittings and, when something didn't work out, even gave us a free extra cupboard.

    Local firms usually have a reputation to maintain.
