Completion Day Advice

Firstly, I am so sorry to repeat a post I know has been done really well previously, but I have searched both the forum and the forum via google and I cannot find the brilliant thread from last year on this topic. If anyone can find it, please do post the link.

Either way...What is on your completion day checklist / advice?

    1. Be packed on time
    2. Ensure your boxes have the right room written on at least 3 sides with at least 2 opposing sides in big black bolder-than-you-think-you-need writing
    3. ETA make sure you have a "KITCHEN" box inc. kettle and beverage facilities (mugs, teaspoons) and write "KITCHEN" on it on every side, as otherwise you'll lose it (ask me how I know :))
    4. Book your removals people to get to yours early; loading the vehicle will take longer than you think
    5. Have all your house keys ready
    6. Charge your phone!
    7. Have your removals people, solicitor and EA on speed dial
    8. Know what you're doing about key exchange
    9. Final utility readings
    10. Got pets? Need to do something with them
    11. Know where your removals vehicle can park at the new house for a good hour or two
    12. Endless patience for when you rock up to your new house on time and the vendor is still packing their stuff (ask me how I know about that one :))
    13. The best curry/chinese/kebab/pizza shop near where you're moving to, because all your cooking/eating stuff will be packed and you'll be too knackered to unpack it
    14. Further to the above, the nearest corner shop that sells the beer you'll have earned to go with the takeaway

Make the bed as soon as possible so you can just roll into it at the end of the day. You don't want to be getting to 11pm at night, shattered from the move to then think 'oh gawd I now need to make the bed'!

Pack bedding, bathroom stuff and one change of clothing for everyone into a bag(s).
Give someone the job of setting up bathroom, making beds and putting out clothing (ready for next day).
Photograph meters as you leave, and as you move into the new house. You will need these for settling up.
Have a pad of paper and a pen handy for noting those little jobs that need doing (e.g. sticking/squeaky doors, duff lightbulbs). If anyone rocks up offering to help, show them the list.
Finally, take your time unpacking, I have friends who rushed to get stuff unpacked and put away. Year's later they threw it out having never used it!
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
  • have a spare roll of parcel tape on hand for when a box inevitably splits.

Make the first job you do when you get to your new house is make the bed - after a day of moving / packing / unpacking the last thing you will want to do at night is have to faff putting the sheets and duvet on.

    Pack an overnight bag.
Pack the kettle and mugs last.
Build beds and make them first.

Packing the van may take less time if you have booked with an award winning gold star firm (ours did last year!)

Put the kitchen box in the car. If you have room put the bedding in as well so you can make up the beds as soon as they are unloaded

If you are not moving too far put the cat/dog into a cattery/kennels for a few days.

Don't forget plentiful supplies for the removal men. If at all possible find out what they would like in advance. From our last 2 moves one lot consumed gallons of tea and biscuits/cake and one lot brought their own drinks and snacks.

Have rolls of loo paper, hand towels and hand wash ready. After a long move they will be extremely important
If you are going to tip them make sure you the get cash in advance

Take your important documents in the car with you, do not pack them.

Passport, financial stuff, valuables. laptop, tablet etc

put your Kitchen box with kettle etc with you in the car so if you get the other end before your removals., least you can make some tea.
Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j
