Totally non-technological hence the user name!
Looking to get a 42'' plasma TV after Christmas (although OH has fallen in love with a 47'' Phillips but our lounge is too small at 4.5m by 3.5m I think)). Which online seem to be recommending Panasonic Viera and Sony Bravia as best buys. Looking to spend £1000 ish (and go to JL for the 5 year warranty if poss) so my questions are:
    1. Are these the best or are there any better makes out there
    2. Should I be going for a 1080 hd ready and are there any other technological details I should consider
    3. Should we also get the home cinema system

I just need someone to say - 'this is a fantastic telly - buy this one' - don't mind researching for best price after that but the range out there is mind boggling.
Please can you all give me the benefit of your collective wisdom:confused:
    Many thanks

We got a new one a couple of months ago. We got a 42" Pioneer, according to hubby its about the best you can get for your money.
    Its HD.
Its really nice, any men that come here seem impressed with it.

AV forums are recommending the Panasonic 42PZ70B which they've got in JL for £1200 - includes the 5 year warranty, free delivery and a home cinema dvd surround sound worth £199. Do John Lewis do decent sales so is it worth waiting til after xmas?
;) If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!
  • I was looking at all the tellys in Tesco extra a week ago and they had a Sharp 46" one for £1600 and it looked fantastic. Maybe a bit big, but it had a narrow frame. I just noticed Currys have a 46" Sharp 1080p for £1195 online. Not sure if it's the same one, but it stood out to me in Tesco compared to all the others. You may be able to get it for your budget somewhere else. I'm sure you can at least get another 5% off at Currys with codes on the voucher pages.

Techno - like you I spent many hours poring through the AV forums site. Eventually (about 2 months ago) I bought the Panasonic TH42PX70 PED - and haven't regretted it for a second. On a Dixons deal I got it for about £750 net of Quidco cashback, Egg card cashback and an online voucher. It came with a "free" home cinema system which retails for about £185. If you need a glass table stand buy one from ebuyer...I got a perfectly good one for about £30 delivered.
    A review here:

The JL 5 year warranty and "pricematch" is extensively discussed on AV forums too...as you have probably noticed!

    Good luck with your choice!

My parents have the 42'' Panasonic Viera. They love it. They bought it after seeing our 50''. :) I'm not technical - all I know is that we're all very happy with our TV's. We also have the Panasonic dvd surround sound system.
My FIL has a 37'' Phillips LCD and his picture is pretty poor in comparison.

And before anyone says anything ;), the blinds are angled away from the TV so no direct sunlight is shining onto the back of the TV. I've also shifted the speakers since the photo was taken.
