42'' Plasma TV - I'm so confused!!!

Totally non-technological hence the user name!
Looking to get a 42'' plasma TV after Christmas (although OH has fallen in love with a 47'' Phillips but our lounge is too small at 4.5m by 3.5m I think)). Which online seem to be recommending Panasonic Viera and Sony Bravia as best buys. Looking to spend £1000 ish (and go to JL for the 5 year warranty if poss) so my questions are:
1. Are these the best or are there any better makes out there
2. Should I be going for a 1080 hd ready and are there any other technological details I should consider
3. Should we also get the home cinema system

I just need someone to say - 'this is a fantastic telly - buy this one' - don't mind researching for best price after that but the range out there is mind boggling.
Please can you all give me the benefit of your collective wisdom:confused:
Many thanks

For a screen that size, you really should be going for the full 'True HD' TV.

    With a resolution of 1920 x 1080.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

its great that you are thinking of getting into home cinema. i have a projector set up integrated into my living room. i love it.
i got all my info and friendly advice from https://www.avforums.com

if you are intending to buy a ps3 to watch blu ray movies then i would get a full hd 1080p lcd tv.
in my opinion the best one for £1000 is the sony 40" kdlv3000 lcd tv. you also want one which plays at 24 frames per sec which this one does.
you will also find advice on speaker systems for your home cinema and amplifiers.
it all depends on your budget?
then also if you are buying good av equipment you need good quality cables to hook it all up.
note that you can buy crap expensive equipment from the likes of argos/curry's and more better quality av equipment at a cheaper price from the likes of richer sounds or sound and vision etc..
    good luck.

any more questions then just ask me.;)

  • Sony Bravia isn't a plasma it's an LCD. They sell lots of tellys off the back of their nice adverts, seen on a plasma their ads look even better. You will notice the difference.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Right I'll pop over to AV forums for a look
Rotti1967- have you got this samsung? just which didn't seem to rate the samsungs they tested
Coveredinbees - does that mean you would go for the plasma?
roddydogs - yeh was thinking about the panasonic - does 2 inches really make all that much difference;) TBH apart from the massive ones I couldn't really tell the difference
    Thanks all for your advice

  • My sister in law has the samsung 46" i think it looks good but my Panasonic plasma is a much better picture.

Mine is a Panasonic 42" Viera class picture with built in freeview.

Plasma's use much more power than the LCD's which i say is the only downside.

They say anything over 40" go for a Plasma but with the resolutions on LCD's getting better it might be best for you to go for one of these.that link i posted it is a true HD where as some of the others are not.

Just been to AV forums and maybe if we move the lounge around the Panasonic PZ70 50'' may be just the ticket!!!!!
Jammiev- thought you were joking when you mentioned the cables - you mean you pay all that money for a telly and they don't give you the connecting leads?? Disgusting!!
