Running a HP laptop with Windows 8.1 which is perhaps coming to the end of it's life. Need to start thinking of replacing it.
I've used Windows 10 on someone else's laptop but I absolutely hate the platform.
What else is out there other than Apple - which I'm not familiar with.
I only use a laptop for bill paying, letter writing and basic internet use?
Any suggestions?

What? There are people here using laptops that came out in the Windows XP era. Yours is practically new.
What is the full model number of your HP laptop and what is wrong with it?0 -
What is the model number or spec for your existing laptop?
The usual recommendations would be replace hard drive with 240gb ssd and update to Win 10
If you insist new laptop, what is your budget?0 -

Get Classic Shell and go with Win 10. Some setting up to do but it's quite good once you get into it.0

I use 8.1 and 10 and find hardly any difference. If you mainly browse the internet and write letters there would be no difference if you use the same browser and office package.0

Do an upgrade if possible.
Windows 10 is a little fiddly to begin with but it is smoother and much better than windows 8. I would most definitely give it another chance and it will breath new life into the old laptop.
Recommend for upgrade:
SSD, 2.5" 500gb are around £100
8gb DDR3 (I am assuming DDR3 as its an 8.1 machine) around £40
If you are going upgrade to 10, make sure its the Pro version and you can get these recycled keys for about a fiver which will save you hundreds if you buy from M$ directly. They are also very legal regardless of what others say.0 -

The first thing I do with every laptop and PC I get, is download Classic Shell. If there is a benefit to running Win 10, you get it, but your machine looks like whatever issue of Win you preferred. Is 8.1 and 10 not very similar anyway?
And is 8.1 not set to go on for a number of years yet? They're only stopping supporting 7 this year!David.0 -
I thought support for 7 ends next year? (14 April 2020 sticks in my mind for some reason).0
