Getting a refund for an expired card

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, please point me in the right direction if it isn't..
In February 2018 I booked flights with Flybe via Opodo and, long story short, Flybe agreed to refund the charges to the card I used for the booking. Unfortunately, the only details I have about the card, in a confirmation email, don't match any of my current cards, so I'm guessing the card I used has expired. I know the first 6 digits are 4462 21, which is code for either Visa Standard Chartered or Visa IDT Financial Services, depending on where you search. I also know the last 4 digits, but not the 6 middle digits. Any suggestions on how to trace this card?
Alternatively, can I insist on a refund by cheque or transfer to my current account?

Surely you can't have been actively using that many credit cards less than a year ago that you can't figure out which one it was - how many cards were you using then and how many of the accounts have you closed since? What do the statements covering last February show? Which cards can be eliminated by virtue of having expiry dates in the next couple of years (suggesting that they'd have been active but not used last February)?
  • Isn't IDT only prepaid cards? If so (happy to be corrected) then Standard Chartered is your best bet. Why not call them up - or why not talk to the retailer; they'll know the full card details.

Also, why are you guessing the card has expired? Yes, it could be but it could also still be within its validity range but you have just got rid of the plastic.

Do you still have a Standard Chartered card starting with 446221? Some cards, when reissued following expiry, change the last 4 digits, so you may still have the account. It may be a debit card, so do you have a Standard Chartered bank account that it might relate to?

You have the email confirmation from last February but you don't have any banking paperwork from the time - sounds odd? I share Eskbanker's incredulity that you really can't recall what cards you had and haven't thought to call the likely establishments up to check it out?

I don't know how Opodo works but wouldn't the refund come from them rather than Flybe? How would Flybe know your card details if it was Opodo who took the original payment?

    Something doesn't add up.
  • Not exactly helpful criticism. To clarify, I didn’t know where to post the question as I believe it must have been a debit card transaction, given that the first 6 digits refer to Visa Debit cards. However, I can’t see a debit card forum where I can post my question. Is there one? I have checked my current account and the transaction isn’t on there, so overall I am puzzled and am looking for some helpful guidance.
  • Why not just ask for the card number THEY will refund to?
It does not matter that the card has expired - it will find its way to the renewed card .
Ask them to tell you the first 6 digits and you should be able to find out who owns that card that way.
  • In response to the comments from Terry. You’re right, Opodo would issue the refund and I have sent them the email from Flybe confirming that they have refunded their costs to Opodo.
Because I can’t trace the card I have asked Opodo for the full bank details but it’s like talking to the wall. Even a GDPR request got me nowhere.
I don’t have any cards currently that start with 446221, and I certainly don’t recall ever using a prepaid card or owning one, hence my confusion.

If I'm to take your subsequent response to Terry as signifying that this one referred specifically to mine, then I fail to see why you'd be so touchy when I simply outlined a logical process of elimination for you to take to identify which of your cards you used last year.

I don't suppose anyone posts on here in the expectation of undying gratitude but equally I wouldn't expect that^ sort of attitude either, so good luck in your search....
  • Did you ever have a Standard Chartered Gold Premium account? (Maybe an offshore account).
  • Stewpot, do you have, or have you had, in the last 12 months, a Standard Chartered bank account that would have also had a debit card to use with it?
  • No never had a Standard Chartered card. I only have one bank account and can’t think where another debit card would come from. It’s obviously something I’ve done but for the life of me I don’t know what.
We sold our house 6 months ago and used some of the funds to clear a couple of credit cards but they wouldn’t start with a 6 digit debit card “code” would they?
  • When you say, 'we' sold our house, I take it there is more than one person involved - could the Opodo transaction have been made with one of their cards?
