New to LPG bottles

Options
Hello, I have a few probably stupid questions about LPG (47kg propane red tanks) that I failed to find answers to on Google. If you can help, thanks!

1) if gas runs out completely does it break anything? Eg, if the bolier was on when it runs dry.
2) is it easy to connect and disconnect bottles? Are there instructions printed on them or are you just expected to know?
3) due to move into the property soon, if the previous owners leave bottles but no information on who they belong to how will I know how to get them returned?
4) am I able to set up a new account with a supplier, or will I be tied in to whatever the last owners had set up?

Thanks

  • 1. It probably won't break anything, but the boiler may need to be reset. You'd be better with 2 x cylinders and an automatic changeover valve to stop this happening.
    2. See https://www.calor.co.uk/gas-bottles/regulators/propane-regulator-guide
    3. If the bottles belong to a supplier this should be stated on the seller's property information form, or ask. The bottles should also be labelled. In most cases this will be Calor or Flogas as they have taken over most of the independent suppliers.
    4. There is no account with bottles, you pay each time you swap them. If it's a Calor bottle there is a cylinder refill agreement

Bottle gas installations are subject to the same Gas Safety Regulations as mains gas and a gas fitter with an LPG ticket is required to work on them.

    Thanks for all the info!
Seller didn't specify on the form unfortunately and now we've exchanged doesn't seem bothered with answering our questions (my mistake for not asking before!)

The important thing to remember when you are connecting or disconnecting hoses to the bottles is that they have a left hand thread.

I expect there will already be a changeover valve fitted. Probably auto but it could be manual.
