Boost Button

Hi, not sure why I am posting, more of a "get it off my chest" type of thing as I doubt there will be anything that can be done.
Basically I am moving to antother flat in the next three weeks. I use SSE for electricity. I was paying £35 per month in the house before this one (whilst living with my ex), so I assumed that the direct debit would cover me here. I found myself getting behind and my DD was increased to £76 PM. I had a lot of things on my plate so never gave monthly meter readings, but only every few months.
Long and short of it is, on arranging this new move next month, I find I owe SSE nearly £1000!! I have only been here approx 16 months, half of which I was paying £35 PM, and the rest £75 PM. Now, I am live alone and dont burn much electicity, so I thought something must be wrong with this bill. I told them I wanted to query it and they said they would look into it and get back to me. In the meantime I checked the main meters and they looked normal as far as I could tell. BUT, on checking the one at the boiler for water and heating I assume, the boost button was on. It never goes off, its on 24/7!! The thing must be faulty. SSE say that meter isnt thier concern, but instead my landlord need to check it.
It looks like I am down nearly £1000 due to my own idiocy and not checking the damn thing before. Luckily, I only switch it on at the mains in winter, otherwise god knows what the bills would be.
I guess I have no way to get my landlord to help with the bill due to thier faulty meter, I mean I cant prove its been like that since I moved in.

Gutted
Extra Info:
Meter is: Sangamo Quartz 7 Economy. There is the boost button itself, but it does nothing. The boost light is already lit up, pressing boost is supposed to cancel it, but it does nothing. I can switch it off at the mains, but on switching it on, the boost comes right back on again.

Sangamo Quartz 7 Economy is a hot water controller, not a meter.
Regardless, the energy used on heating water depends mainly on how much hot water you use, not on some settings.0 -

This controller is suppused to heat water at night when energy is cheaper. Boost button overrides this, but for 1 hour only.0 -

Yes, I understand its supposed to be for 1 hour. Problem is, is on 24/7, its never turns off.0 -
This is a problem only if you are on Economy 7 (?) tariff. Are you?0

No idea what tariff I am on, I let SSE tell me which was best. I never touch these controllers on know much about them. But I seem to have worked the mystery out...or at least it seems likely the reason for the bill on top of my DD. Someone (not me), set the timer to come on during peak hours, and off at night!!
Having now corrected this (for the last 3 weeks Ill be here...), it is set to come on in the wee small hours and be off during the day. However, the boost button still does nothing, no boost in the evening if I needed it. Sigh...0 -

Your tariff will be shown on the bill. If it's E7, you will have a dual rate meter and your bill will show the units used on each rate, night and day.
Do you have night storage heaters? And is the 'boiler' you refer to an immersion heater (i.e. you don't have a wet central heating system with rads)?
To boost during the 17 daytime hours will cost 3-400% per kWh more than on night rate.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
