3 and cancelling

My 12 month contract with 3 ended a month ago.

If I want to, I can cancel now, but I need to give them 30 days notice.

But, if I decide to port my number elsewhere, I guess I can ask them for the PAC now and then get another SIM with another provider? My question relates to the 30 notice period. If I PAC my number from 3 to another provider, do I need to time it so that the number ports close to the end of the 'live' PAC period, which I think is 30 days anyway? I don't want to be stung by 3 if the number ports before any notice period due is served.

Yes, you have to time it and you won't be 'stung'. They'll just charge you for full 30 days even if the number is ported out a little earlier. Not a big loss.

Make sure you use the PAC if you get it. Otherwise the contract goes on regardless of any notice.

Excellent. Many thanks for your advice.

One more question. If I cancel today, say, then in 20 days time I ask for a PAC from 3, would I then effectively restart the 30 day notice period?

No. Today you ask for a PAC and then you give it to your new provider, say, 5 days before it expires. Getting a PAC has the same effect as giving a notice.

If you just cancel, your service will cease in 30 days and the number will die/be reallocated.

To keep your number, ask for your PAC and give this to your new supplier within 30 days. If you don't use the PAC, your 3 contract will just continue until you request another one.

Be prepared for a fairly hard sell from 3 retentions - they did actually come up with some decent deals for me.
