overcharged

  • plus they dont actually legally have to refund you.

I don't agree with this, it would be classed as misleading to have a ticket price and then then charge someone a different price at the till without referencing the matter. Misleading actions are prohibited under the consumer rights act.

Although highly likely an error rather than a deliberate ploy to mislead, the shop appear to have admitted the mistake (based on the store credit being given).

Probably not worth fighting but once I'd spent my store credit I wouldn't be shopping there again due to the poor service.

You expect the cashier to know all the prices and realise when they scanned something that its listed for a different price on the display?

i agree its almost certainly a mistake, but there will have been reference to it, the display on the card reader, clearly the receipt shows the price charged. Just because the OP didnt look at either doesnt mean the store is acting dishonestly.

The item is on the website at reduced price.

Is this just an online discount or did they display the same price instore?

In terms of a retailing doing this deliberately, I doubt requiring the consumer to look at a card reader or receipt as acknowledgement the price is different would exclude a retailer from their obligations with regards to misleading actions.

Perfectly possible to buy plenty of items together so not note the total is off and then stuff the receipt in the bag (some shops ask if you want the receipt in the bag).

I wouldn't expect the cashier to know either but if it were agreed a mistake has occurred I would expect the refund by the same method of payment.

Were the shop to disagree and say it wasn't on sale then any offer would likely be good will unless the shopper could demonstrate otherwise regarding the price displayed.

Clarification required from the OP of course, but there wasn't mention of the store disagreeing that the item was incorrectly charged.

Very likely the till wasn't set to the sale price, should the shop agree an mistake has occurred store credit as refund is poor service IMHO.

They may have offered a store credit for a variety of reasons other than admitting a mistake

    1. general goodwill/to solve a problem
    2. they may have a policy where if items are reduced in a set period after purchase they will refund, some like John Lewis have this

I just think for the amounts involved I'd just accept the store credit rather than fighting a difficult battle over a few quid.
