Which Eligibility Checker To Trust?

  • I agree with Gary. I think that even if the eligibility checker is saying "Card Approved at 100%" it will still be subject to a hard credit search...

  • Then my aploagies as I have not been clear in what I’m trying to say.

Before posting my response now I have also I called a customer representative to clarify.

So my issue is that the indication of 100% pre approved is being on the basis of the soft check.... YES we all know a hard check will take place, but most of the time as long as details match and no hidden nasties that weren’t available on the soft check show up then it should proceed.

But this is not the case.... Yes you could pass the check obviously... but they are not showing the pre approved based on the soft check of the file....

They are only showing the 100% pre approved for the rate!....

This is what I find misleading....

As I questioned why I was given 100% pre approval with them, but low to no chance on other sites including virgins own.

They have said we did not say you have any chance to get the card, we just guarantee the rate should you be accepted.
  • TL;DR - eligibility checkers are to be taken with a pinch of salt and are not 100% gauranteed.

    Thanks Gary, Legend.
  • So to update this thread, thought I would have a go at a few and here were my results:

Virgin - Refer - Approved - Took 3 working days to hear back.

Barclaycard - Declined - Thought this would actually be the Card I would get.

Tandem - Approved - Instant really easy process.

Tesco - Refer - Text message asking to call, but as I got the Virgin I shall not continue.
  • Interesting read. I would like to add my experience to this.

Barclay Card Main site - Pre-Approved at advertised Apr (18.9%) Went through all checks and accepted same day.

Virgin - Pre-Approved via Moneysupermarket site - Virgin's own site said 9/10 or 95% chance. Went through via Moneysupermarket and was instantly approved and got the rate advertised (19.9%) along with 29 month BT duration.

BoS - Moneysupermarket said 60% chance of acceptance - Went direct via BoS and came back with 95% chance of acceptance, further check and they accepted me at advertised rate (6.4%) and a £10k limit.
  • Cheers Jester - Good to see that you didn’t have any issues
