Hello
So we bought a house with a multi fuel fire, and out the back there was a coal bunker which had a load of what looked like coal in it. We have been trying to burn it but its not burning very well and when it's cooled it looks orange in colour almost like brick?! Any ideas what it is? Before burning it looks black and shiny like coal....

It could be lignite. Very poor quality coal.0

Could it be coke?0

It looks like discarded material from a coal washing plant,That is very low grade coal, mainly stone which many years ago in the North East we called slag. It will burn in a cast iron slow burning combustion stove with lots of polluting gases and low heat. Definitely do not use in a household stove
Advice is use as hardcore or dump it (in your local waste disposal facility of course)0
