Santander to shut 140 branches

  • I rarely go into my bank branch and my local city has 4 Santander branches, only 1 of which is closing. I feel sorry for those who are not able to bank online for whatever reason and struggle with getting into their local big town. They will be the ones who will find it most inconvenient.

Spanish-owned bank Santander is slashing its branch network by almost a fifth, putting 1,270 jobs at risk. The bank blamed the closures on "changes in how customers are choosing to carry out their banking".

It said branch transactions have fallen 23% in the last three years, while digital transactions have soared 99%.

Worth remembering when looking at the figures above, that Santander don't yet support paying in cheques via their app yet - when they do, the number of branch transactions is going to fall further.

Having said that, this decision means our closest Santander here in London will close (not that I remember when I last used it) - in that it joins our local HSBC and Natwest.

It's sad because my local high street branch is one of the ones closing and that's where my kids opened their 1st bank accounts and got their start at learning what it means to save.

Having said that, that was a couple of years ago and they haven't been in since ... so ...

I remember opening an account as a kid at Bradford and Bingley and getting a colouring pencil set. I remember being so happy :p

We are already at saturation point with cafes, bookies, charity shops and boarded up shops.

With no bank. Footfall may well fall further sharply.
