  • And yet in Spain there is still a bank on every corner and the 123 account still pays up to 3% on balances up to 20,000 euros. But the 4G network is superb so no issue using mobile/app banking. Go figure.

Over three years... it's not even down a quarter. Like I said, it's not even an 8% drop per year.

What sort of business would you expect to sustain 8% losses in footfall year after year and not do anything about it?

BBC quoted 'Santander, based in Madrid, Spain'. Par for the course.
To be fair, Santander themselves also say this throughout their santander.com website:
Corporate Headquarters: CGS Av. Cantabria s/n 28660 Boadilla del Monte, Madrid (Spain)

Or perhaps your comment related to the corporate golf course that's on the large campus there? ;)

Well it would do, that's the Spanish website for Banco Santander, S.A. Who happen to own Santander UK plc, whose Registered Office is at 2 Triton Square, Regent's Place, London, NW1 3AN, And has its own website in English.

I wonder if the BBC would similarly refer to 'TSB, based in Alicante, Spain'. Or 'FCE Bank plc, based in Dearborn, Michigan'. Etc and so forth.

Yes, I understand the distinction between UK banking subsidiaries and overseas parent corporations, but it really doesn't seem unreasonable to me to refer to Santander as a Spanish bank, given the common brand identity used globally.

If the BBC, or anyone else, was simply referring to 'Ford' then yes, Dearborn wouldn't seem out of place as the ultimate brand location, whereas it might be different if they were referring more specifically to 'Ford Money'.

Likewise, if they were doing a piece about, say, Nissan's factory in Sunderland, I wouldn't see it as noteworthy or suspicious for anyone to refer to them as being based in Japan, rather than splitting hairs about Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK....

I didn't? I'm saying I'm surprise the % isn't higher, if people bothered to read.

Once again the bashers are out.

I think I may have finally found a 'benefit' of being a Santander Select customer. They sent a letter today to say sorry my nearest Branch is closing, and giving me the addresses of the 2 next nearest ones. They also say that Select customers can use the Post Office.

As I barely ever went into the Branch they are closing, I am not having a problem with not having it in the future. I am concerned, though, about the staff who might lose their jobs, and about yet another empty premises in the town centre. We are already at saturation point with cafes, bookies, charity shops and boarded up shops.

It isn't a benefit. Anyone who recently used one of the closed branches has or will receive a letter.

I did say 'benefit', not benefit. Subtle difference:cool:

Even when I had an account at a bank with a nearby branch I never went. My lunch break is too short and they were closed by the time I finished work.

My employer even once sent a memo round our office saying that you are expected to bank online and not to go to banks during working hours. Ironic really, given it's a large bank with high street branches! (should add this was part of a long list of things we were not supposed to do in working hours, but still).
