Yes. I went to Tesco and filled up. 5 minutes later I drove past Morrisons and their fuel was a penny a litre cheaper. That was quite an issue at the time.

No. But do a search and you’ll find the question comes up about once a month.

It really all depends on the car (turbocharged or N/A)
With turbocharged cars, the premium, premium fuels such as shell v power do tend to be better, at least in my experience. The premium fuels also “claim” to have better cleaning additives in them.

But, for your everyday small city cars supermarket fuels are absolutely fine. And to be fair they’re absolutely fine in every other car. They won’t cause any damage, that is unless you were unfortunate enough to buy some of Tesco’s contaminated petrol lol.

  • Brother-in-law's Jag wrecked by Tesco diesel; the engineers report said as much. Too much silicon contamination in it and used over a long time; tank, fuel lines, pump and injectors all needed replacing; car was a write -off. I've had no problems with petrol though.

I'd love to know how they came to that conclusion given that all fuel in the UK has to meet the same minimum specification and the quality of even the cheapest lowest spec UK fuels is superior to that in other nations, even in their branded fuel stations, and they're not complaining of the fuel wrecking their cars. And I don't even know why they're claiming all the entire fuel system would need replacing.

Even if someone is concerned, then half a tank of premium fuel from time to time would likely resolve any perceived issues.

I've always run my cars on supermarket fuel, going back over nearly 30 years of driving. Never had any problems.

Because it was all over the news that a certain Tesco (can’t remember which one) was selling contaminated fuel, which subsequently damaged a lot of engines. It’s happened a couple of times with Tesco now. I think it got contaminated at the petrol station where it is stored underground, so it will have met all minimum specs at time of production.
Give it a quick google search and you can read all about it.
