Sold house and now having to rent advice

+1 for the holiday rental. We've done this a couple of times, and this it the right time of year to do it. It would give you until the holiday season starts at Easter (but only if you're in a part of the country where people go on holiday!!).
We found that the owners of the holiday lets were pleased to have us - it gave them an income at a time of the year when normally there wouldn't be any, for very little effort on their part (no change-over day every week etc). The best thing to do is look on holiday let sites, and speak to the owners directly, as they're unlikely to be advertised as long-term lets.
The market for short-term lets (ie shorter than 6 months but longer than a couple of weeks) is something I've mentioned on these boards before. There are lots of people that might be glad of this arrangement - people who are between houses, people working on short-term contracts, people who are out of their own homes temporarily due to fire or flood. There's definitely a gap in the market. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
It's not all doom and gloom to rent .. the housing market is so fickle at the moment it's a positive thing to break the chain and might make you money. Why are you so against it?
Any rentals I have lived in have been four bed detached, I did rent an apartment once and took on a garage for a while.
You're not being inconvenienced any more than anyone else. It's savvy to break the chain at the moment.0 -
House purchase / sale is a PITA at the moment, if you wait until you find something else you want to buy you've still got the chain above that to contend with plus your buyers may go elsewhere, so breaking the chain at this time would likely work well for you.
As for a 3 or 4 bed well it doesn't sound as if you actually need 4 beds so why spend more than you need though you should trade off the extra rental cost of a 4 bed against storage if you've really got that much stuff. Timing may dictate whats available anyway.0 -
Hi,
maybe your buyers will let you rent for a few months if they are in no immediate hurry to move.0 -
I remember all the stuff I had when I sold an old cottage - it had 5 sheds (none of them reasonable) but they were full of junk. Also the loft. Most contents went to the tip/recycled or donated. But mostly the tip. Made me realise how much utter rubbish we had spent on. It's therapeutic to declutter, will put you in a much better position when you do decide to buy, and makes life flexible for you to concentrate on returning to work etc for a bit.0
