Who pays for the energy?

Hi,
I just moved into my new rented apartment on the 10th of Jan and on Sunday I put the request to change to EDF. I was told this will take 3 weeks...
My question is who is responsible for paying the energy bill in the meantime, my friends told me that I should forward the meter readings from when we got the keys to EDF and the bill will be paid by the LL or LA?
Tenant Shop was handling moving side of things like notifying the council, water supply and energy company that the previous tenants had moved out. So will Enstroga bill me then for energy between the activation date?
Many Thanks,
Jason

You, obviously?
Sorry but why would you not be responsible for it?0 -
That sounds about right.jason15300 wrote: »I just moved into my new rented apartment on the 10th of Jan and on Sunday I put the request to change to EDF. I was told this will take 3 weeks...
You are, you're presumed to be in a deemed contract with the current supplier the second that you moved in and used any electricity. Why do you think that you're not liable? My question is who is responsible for paying the energy bill in the meantime
Ignore your friends. You needed to submit a reading to the current supplier when you moved in so that they could start charging you for the electricity that your using. EDF and your current supplier should sort out the switchover reading between themselves.my friends told me that I should forward the meter readings from when we got the keys to EDF and the bill will be paid by the LL or LA?
Never heard of them. Why would you trust an external company to handle the things that are ultimately your responsibility if your not paying them?Tenant Shop was handling moving side of things like notifying the council, water supply and energy company that the previous tenants had moved out.0 -
You are responsible from when you move in regardless of what utility provider has been selected.0

You are liable for all power you use from when you moved in.
By law you have a "deemed contract" with the existing supplier so they will charge you for this period, usually not on a great tariff so switching quickly was the right thing to do. So when the switch to goes through you will receive a bill from the existing company. Check that the opening readings match what you took when you moved in and if so pay it. You can't pass it on to the landlord.0 -
Your friends are idiots. Stop listening to them.jason15300 wrote: »my friends told me that I should forward the meter readings from when we got the keys to EDF and the bill will be paid by the LL or LA0 -
To clarify, you're not responsible for energy from when you move in, it's from when your tenancy starts.
If your tenancy starts on the 10th, and you don't move in until the 25th, you are responsible for energy bills from the 10th.0 -
If you have not contacted the current supplier of the property there is, if they know the previous tenant has left, a chance that they will reject the switch.0

Thanks for the replies, this is my first move into a flat which the bills I am responsible for, hence the confusion.0

And council tax, telephone, water bills, broadband & TV license.
Hope it all works out well!0 -
OP, I think you and/or your friends are getting confused between:
- any power used between the last occupants closing their account, and when you moved in and took an opening reading, and
- the power you will use while waiting for the switch to take effect.0
