Electric Distribution Company have no plans of my cables
Hi All,
I have contacted my electric distribution company to move my meter as it is in the kitchen hidden away in some cupboards. Was told I'd have to pay in excess of 1.5k - which i am reluctantly going to pay if the work does go ahead. A member of their team came down for a site visit, turns out there is no trace of where the electrical cabling is on the plans. They want me to dig up my garage which is on the other side of the wall where the meter is situated but there's no guarantee the cables are there. I don't plan to dig until they tell me exactly whats there.
Should the distribution company legally know where they are?
Has anyone experienced anything similar to this?
Also, has anyone moved their meters in recent times and how much did it cost?
Thanks,

If it is an older house they may not hold plans of the exact route of the cable. A neighbour wanted his moved and he got a quote for a few hundred pounds. Due to the route of the existing cable from the street which must have cost them thousands but could only charge him as per the quote.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Thanks for the speedy response spiro! It's a 1950's property. Did they update your plans according to this?0

I doubt there is any requirement for them to have plans as to minor service cables to individual properties. Such cables can often be traced using suitable equipment.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

There is no possible way that the electrical distribution company could or should know where cables are situated. How could they be expected to track changes made over 100+ years in some cases.0

They don't have any plans at all as far as im aware. They spent 45 minutes trying to trace the cables but to no avail. Knocked on both my neighbours doors but none of them were in0
